TINY WORLDS AND GRAND VISION: PLC SYDNEY CELEBRATES STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE ART OF MARÍA FERNANDA CARDOSO NEW COPY

PLC Sydney hosted a unique celebration of creativity, science and environmental observation, as the College unveiled The Reproductive Potential of Flora and Spiders—a striking exhibition by internationally acclaimed Sydney-based Colombian artist, María Fernanda Cardoso. Presented in partnership with Sullivan+Strumpf gallery, the event also marked the presentation of the 2024 PLC Sydney Students’ Photographic Prize.

The exhibition, curated by Miss Jen Gair, features Cardoso’s mesmerising microphotography, which explores the hidden beauty and reproductive structures of plants and spiders. Guests were honoured to hear from Joanna Strumpf, Director of Sullivan+Strumpf, who attended as guest speaker and presented this year’s student photography awards alongside Principal Dr Paul Burgis.

Before the formalities began, guests were welcomed with musical performances by talented PLC Sydney musicians under the direction of Mrs Sylwia Waples.

The official proceedings commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country by Art & Design Captain, Jasmine Gifford. Gallery Curator Miss Gair welcomed the crowd of friends and families and introduced the award presentations.

Students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 had been invited to respond to the theme ‘Tiny Worlds: The Natural Environment’, taking on the role of environmental documenter to convey their personal encounters with the natural world. The results were diverse, thoughtful, and visually captivating.

Ms Strumpf praised the students' efforts and shared insights into Cardoso’s artistic process, highlighting the artist’s fascination with microscopic structures and the complex lives of the creatures and plants she photographs.
