Joshua Charadia
Congratulations goes to Sydney based visual artist, Joshua Charadia, winner of the 2023 Perry Prize for Drawing, as judged by Imants Tillers, artist, writer and curator.
Joshua, who also won the People’s Choice Award in 2020, takes home the $25,000 acquisitive prize, which is among the most significant of its kind in the country.
Judge's commendations also went to M Bozzec, Damian Dillon and Tia Madden who excelled in a very fine field of 40 finalists in this year's award.
At the opening of the exhibition of Finalists, Imants Tillers, commented on the wonderful contribution the Prize makes to the local community, with such an engaging exhibition of varied subject matter and wide ranging technical approaches.
Joshua has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, from the National Art School, Sydney (2017).
He presented solo exhibitions in Sydney and Katoomba, and been featured in group exhibitions across Australia. Joshua has also been a finalist in numerous art prizes, including the prestigious Sulman Prize (2020) and Dobell Drawing Prize (2021, 2019). In 2021 he won the South West Sydney Award at the Fisher's Ghost Art Award, and in 2018 he won 2nd place at the Belle ArtStart Prize.
His works are held in the National Art School collection and private collections in Australia, the UK and USA.
Charadia has cast his aesthetic and critical eye on the complex forms of Australia’s industrial landscape. His ' Nocturnes' series explores the nature of consciousness and perception through depictions of the industrial landscape at night. Working from photographs, he utilises oil paint and charcoal to capture the peculiar beauty of these scenes. As night falls, constellations of lights scatter across coastal ports. In this light, even the dense infrastructure of container yards are transformed into works of movement and beauty.
