AND THE 2021 WINNER IS...
Canberra artist Peter Maloney
PLC Sydney is excited to announce that Canberra artist Peter Maloney has been awarded the $25,000 acquisitive Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing 2021, for his drawing 'Equine Traveller'.
The work was selected as the winning entry by artist Lindy Lee, 2021 Judge. In a statement about his entry Peter said: 'The carefully crafted linear imagery in Equine Traveller interrogates the heroic quality of mid-century abstract expressionism. Much of my current practice employs a muted palette, incorporating copper and iron oxide paints in a conscious engagement with material decay and physiological deterioration. While the image of the horse suggests stamina and strength, Equestrian Traveller refers to the inexorable journey each of us makes towards mortality.'
PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD ANNOUNCED
This year Adelaide Perry Gallery exhibited 44 finalist works in the Perry Prize Exhibition of Finalists and invited visitors to cast their vote for the People’s Choice award, valued at $2,000. This year the award is shared between equal winners Nicola Bolton and Kate De la Motte.
Of her charcoal drawing Water Under the Canberry Bridge 2020 Nicola Bolton said ‘I have a strong sense of place and deep love of the Australian countryside and a particular passion for capturing the gentle, romantic light dusk, and dawn.’
Of her striking Conte and charcoal on canvas work, Self-Portrait, Kate De la Motte said ‘Narrative elements around my drawing process are explored by recording and archiving images and videos of myself making work. This becomes source material I use to evidence different points in time through my process. I experiment with abstract mark-making to disrupt the figurative and reveal more emotional aspects involved in the act of making.’
Congratulations Nicola and Kate!
