The beginning of the school year at PLC Sydney is always marked by a sense of anticipation, the energy of new beginnings, the return of familiar faces and the excitement of new opportunities ahead. From the first day of term, the College comes alive with activity as students reconnect, settle into classrooms and begin another year of growth.
Across the campus, there were many “firsts” as 2026 began. New Pre-Kindergarten students took their first steps into school life through staggered start days and family conferences, while Year 7 and new Senior School students began forming friendships and finding their place in the College community. Returning students welcomed one another back, and boarders rejoined their PLC Sydney family after the holidays.
In the Senior School’s first Chapel service of the year, Mrs Edwina Soh (Director of Chaplaincy and Christian Studies) encouraged students to think about the kind of person they wished to become in 2026, reminding them that connection grows when we choose understanding and curiosity. It was a fitting message for the start of a year centred on learning, character and community.
From the very first week, classrooms quickly settled into purposeful routines. Students and teachers resumed the shared work of inquiry and discovery that defines learning at PLC Sydney, with curiosity and collaboration setting the tone for the months ahead.
The new school year is also a time for families to connect. The Parents & Friends Twilight Drinks provided a warm and relaxed opportunity for new and returning families to meet, share stories and begin building friendships within the College community.
As the sun set over the campus, families gathered to celebrate the year ahead and welcome those joining PLC Sydney for the first time. Events like these reflect the important role parents and carers play in the life of the College, strengthening the relationships that support students throughout their journey.
Behind the scenes, many members of the community were already at work supporting the start of term. The Preloved Uniform Shop, run by dedicated volunteers, once again became a place not just for practical help, but for conversation and connection. For many families, it is one of the first places they experience the spirit of generosity that characterises PLC Sydney.
The start of term also marks the return of Saturday sport, with Parents & Friends volunteers once again firing up the barbeques on the sidelines. The weekly sports BBQs are a much-loved tradition, a simple but meaningful way families can connect while supporting students as they represent the College. For many parents, volunteering at Saturday sport is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to become involved in the life of PLC Sydney.
Planning for the year ahead is already underway as well. The Fair Committee has begun preparations for Open Day and Fair, their major fundraising event for the year that brings the whole community together and showcases the vibrancy of College life. These early planning meetings are another example of the many ways parents contribute their time and energy to strengthening the College community.
‘Together, these early moments of the year help establish a strong sense of belonging for both students and families, at the heart of the PLC Sydney experience.’
One of the first places students reconnect each year is in their homeroom. These small, supportive groups provide a daily point of connection where students are known, encouraged and guided by their teachers. Homeroom time helps establish routines, build relationships and ensures each student begins the year with a clear sense of belonging.
Beyond homeroom, every student is part of one of PLC Sydney’s six Houses. Remaining in the same House from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 gives students a lasting sense of identity and connection across year groups.
From the first weeks of term, House spirit is already evident at events such as swimming carnivals and cross country, where students come together to participate, support one another and celebrate shared achievements. The House system is one of the ways students quickly find their place within the College community, building friendships and connections that continue throughout their years at PLC Sydney.

At PLC Sydney, education extends beyond academic learning. The start of the year is a time when students begin to shape not only what they will learn, but who they will become.
Through House activities, Service Learning and leadership opportunities, students develop values such as grace, wisdom, reverence and service. These experiences help build confidence and resilience while encouraging students to contribute positively to the wider community.
Growth happens in everyday moments, in classrooms, on the sports field, in Chapel and in conversations with teachers and friends. It is through these shared experiences that students grow into capable and thoughtful young women.
The opening weeks of the year reflect what makes PLC Sydney distinctive: a strong sense of belonging, meaningful relationships and a shared commitment to growth.
From first days and first friendships to early lessons and community gatherings, the year has begun with warmth and purpose.
Together, students, families and staff have set the tone for a year of learning, connection and discovery , a year shaped not only by achievement, but by the relationships and experiences that define life at PLC Sydney.
