Michael brought to PLC Sydney a lifetime of elite hockey experience, having represented Australia as a Kookaburra (#252) and later coached both in Australia and internationally. Yet it was the way he chose to share his Olympic experience and expertise, generously, humbly and always in service of young people, that made him so deeply cherished.
With great sadness, we share the passing of Michael Nobbs, PLC Sydney’s Firsts Hockey Coach, who died on Thursday after a long and courageous battle with illness. Michael was a highly respected and deeply loved member of our College community, having coached here for the past 12 years, and his loss will be felt profoundly by students, families and staff.
Michael’s impact at PLC Sydney was exceptional. He absolutely loved this school and spoke about it with pride well beyond the school gates. PLC Sydney Hockey held a special place in his heart, and he brought unwavering passion, care and commitment to every girl and every game. His belief in our students was evident in everything he did, and he dedicated himself to helping each player grow in confidence, skill and character.
As Firsts Hockey Coach, Michael led with integrity and purpose. He had a rare ability to see potential in every player, often speaking of State and even Olympic pathways, and he sought every opportunity to inspire, whether through direct coaching, mentoring our coaching staff, or sharing his wisdom and experience. His teams enjoyed great success, winning the S01 trophy on many occasions, and Michael felt every win and every loss alongside his players.
Michael’s influence extended far beyond the field. During the COVID years, when students faced unprecedented disruption, his guidance helped our hockey players flourish. His online presentations, frequently featuring his daughter, Kaitlin Nobbs, and other Olympians, were engaging, uplifting, and deeply motivating, and remain treasured memories for many in our community.
Even when illness prevented him from coaching in recent years, Michael remained a constant presence. Whenever possible, he was there in person, cheering our girls on and offering quiet words of encouragement and wisdom. Being with the team brought him great joy and helped sustain him through the most challenging times.
The father of two PLC Sydney girls (Kaitlin and Jamiee), the College community shared in his pride when he heard his daughter Kaitlin speak at Speech Day last year. We also fondly remember the times when Lee Capes (Hockeyroo #240) and Kaitlin joined us to inspire our Junior School girls.
Michael is survived by daughters Kaitlin (Hockeyroo #411) and Jaimee, and a wide circle of students, players, families and colleagues whose lives he shaped through his commitment to the game he loved.
We give thanks to God for Michael. For his generosity of spirit, his belief in young people, and the enduring hockey legacy he leaves at PLC Sydney.
He will be remembered as an exceptional coach and sportsman, a devoted father, and a man who gave so much to others. Vale Michael.
