The Annual Strings Concert , held on 29 August, was a vibrant celebration of the breadth and depth of the strings program at PLC Sydney. Featuring ensembles from Kindergarten through to Year 12, the evening highlighted the growth, discipline, and joy that come from learning and performing music together.
The concert opened with a striking massed performance involving all string players across the College, before moving to our youngest ensembles, Evandale Strings and Junior Orchestra . These performances demonstrated the enthusiasm and dedication of students beginning their musical journey, reflecting the strength of the school’s early music education program.
As students progress, the program provides opportunities to explore more specialised musical experiences. Performances from the String Quartet, Cello Quintet, and String Octet showcased the collaboration and skill required in chamber music, while the Baroque Ensemble transported audiences back in time with authentic instruments and works by Vivaldi. A highlight of the evening was the debut of PLC Sydney’s first Gypsy Band , performing an arrangement of Deux Guitares by Dana (Year 9), an example of how students are encouraged to explore creativity through arranging and performance.
The concert also celebrated the commitment of Year 12 students, acknowledging their many years of contribution to the strings program. Their performances were a reminder of the enduring value of sustained engagement in music education, from building confidence and discipline to nurturing friendships and creativity.
The night concluded with the Senior Chamber Orchestra , whose performances of Tchaikovsky’s Waltz from Serenade for Strings and the Prelude from Bloch’s Concerto Grosso No.1 demonstrated the artistry and maturity that can be achieved through years of study and collaboration.
The Annual Strings Concert was a celebration of learning, growth, and the shared joy of making music together. It reflected the heart of PLC Sydney’s music program, fostering creativity, excellence, and a lifelong love of music.
