PLC SYDNEY STUDENTS PRESENT AT INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE CONFERENCE IN HONG KONG

Over the July holidays, eight Year 10 students from PLC Sydney swapped their winter coats for summer uniforms as they travelled to Hong Kong to attend the International Student Science Conference (ISSC), hosted by our sister school, St Paul’s Co-educational College.

Selected for their outstanding Year 10 Science Research Projects (SRP), the students joined peers from five other schools around the world: Tianjin (China), Venice (Italy), Taizhou (Taiwan), Dehradun (India), and Hobart (Australia). The group was accompanied by Mrs Jo McGrouther (Head of Science), and Mr Alex Trimble, with organisational support from Mrs Hendriks.

A week of world-class science and innovation

Throughout the conference, students attended lectures and workshops hosted by leading academics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Topics ranged from genetically modified soybeans, presented by Professor Lam Hon Ming, to emerging theories on the origins of the universe by Emeritus Professor Kenneth Young.

Hands-on sessions included a drone workshop, interacting with robotic basketball players preparing for Robocon 25, and a memorable lecture on robotic surgery by Professor Chiu Wai Yan.

Sharing science and culture

Each school showcased their student research projects before an audience that included CUHK professors. PLC Sydney students Kitty Liu and Lilian Preston, recipients of the Dr Paul Burgis Award for Excellence in Science Research, presented their findings with clarity and confidence. Their presentation received high praise from Professor Young during the closing ceremony.

The week also celebrated cultural diversity with a vibrant ‘Cultural Night’. Students from each country shared traditional games, food, and performances. PLC Sydney’s contribution featured Vegemite tastings and a group Nutbush dance that had everyone on their feet.

More than a conference

Beyond the academic program, the hospitality of our Hong Kong hosts made a lasting impact. Local students generously shared their city, leading guided tours to museums, shopping districts, and favourite eateries. These experiences offered insights into daily life in Hong Kong that only locals could provide.

Looking ahead

The next International Student Science Conference will be held in Taiwan in 2026. Year 9 students are encouraged to begin thinking about their Science Research Projects in Term 4. This enriching academic and cultural opportunity could be yours next year.

PLC Sydney is proud of our students’ achievements and grateful to our international partners for fostering such meaningful global connections.
