How PLC Sydney forms confident, responsible young women

At PLC Sydney, leadership is not simply about titles or positions. It is about developing the confidence, integrity and sense of responsibility that enable young women to use their voices thoughtfully and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

From the earliest years of school through to graduation, students are encouraged to speak with conviction, support one another and lead with empathy. Two recent moments in the life of the College, the Junior School Leaders Installation and the Notable Achievers Assembly, beautifully captured this culture of leadership and voice in action.

Leadership begins early

In the Junior School years, students are involved in a range of leadership opportunities embedded within the curriculum and annual events. We start early, encouraging and supporting girls to find their voices and seek opportunities to serve others.

As the girls begin the process of nominating and voting for leadership positions, they also learn about responsibility, representation and the importance of contributing to their community.

In the Junior School, leadership opportunities help students begin to see themselves as capable contributors to their community.

At PLC Sydney, leadership in Year 6 is not limited to those holding formal positions. While Captains and Vice-Captains play important roles, every Year 6 student is recognised as a leader, encouraged to model kindness, responsibility and respect within the school community.

At a special Installation service this term, our Year 6 leaders were formally presented with their badges, marking the beginning of their leadership journey for the year ahead. Surrounded by families, teachers and fellow students, the occasion was both a celebration and a moment of responsibility as these young leaders committed to serving their peers and school community.

The ceremony was made particularly meaningful through the support of the College’s senior leaders. Members of the 2026 Senior School leadership team presented the badges, symbolising the connection between the different stages of leadership at PLC Sydney.

It was also a joy to see the strong support of the Year 6 parents in attendance, celebrating the growth and achievements of their daughters as they take on these new responsibilities.

Moments like these remind students that leadership is not something that begins in Year 12; it grows over time through encouragement, practice and example.

Celebrating leadership beyond the classroom

Later in the term, the College community gathered again to recognise another powerful expression of student voice and leadership: the achievements of the Class of 2025.

At a special Notable Achievers Assembly, we celebrated the brilliance and determination of our recent graduates and honoured their outstanding HSC achievements. It was a wonderful opportunity to welcome these exceptional young women and their families back to campus and recognise the dedication that shaped their success.

A highlight of the assembly was hearing directly from several members of the Class of 2025, generously sharing their reflections and experiences with current students, offering thoughtful insights into their learning journeys and the opportunities ahead.

Their words were a powerful reminder of the value of student voice, and the confidence that comes from being encouraged to think independently and speak openly.

A culture of voice and responsibility

Together, these moments reflect a distinctive aspect of PLC Sydney's culture. Leadership is nurtured across every stage of school life, from the early experiences of Year 6 students learning to represent their peers, to the confident young women who return to share their achievements and reflections with the next generation.

Students are encouraged not only to excel academically but also to develop the courage to contribute, advocate and lead.

Through opportunities in the classroom, co-curricular life, Houses and service, PLC Sydney students learn that leadership is grounded in character, in kindness, integrity and a willingness to serve others.

As the Junior School leaders begin their year of service and the Class of 2025 steps confidently into the next chapter of their lives, both groups reflect the same enduring goal: forming young women who are thoughtful, articulate and ready to make a positive impact in the world.
