Year 7 will complete 3 design projects throughout the year. Within each area products will be designed to meet a specific design brief. A portfolio will be used to document the processes involved such as research and investigation, idea development, planning, production and evaluation of the designs.
Introduction to Technology: Innovation and Emerging Technologies
This unit introduces the use of ICT within the College. A study of innovation and emerging technologies is used to enhance the ICT learning experiences. Examples of innovative product design will also be used to show how designers can creatively impact on society and the environment.

Technologies: Graphics and polymer technologies
Design Project: Design a bedroom inspired by Marc Newson and/or Karim Rashid. Create a prototype of a perspex wall feature for the room.
A study of Marc Newson and Karim Rashid design will be used as inspiration for designing a living space. A prototype of a perspex wall feature will be produced to suit the design and style of the room. Skills will be developed in drawing, CAD, designing and styling of spaces and the use of plastics including cutting, moulding, joining and shaping.

A study of the fashion designers Ellie Saab and Collette Dinnigan will be used as inspiration for the designing and making of a garment. Skills will be developed in pattern making, cutting, basic construction and decorative techniques.

Design Project: Design, photograph and create the cover of the food magazine ‘Delicious” to feature a new wrap.
A study of international chefs and food photography will be used as inspiration for the designing of a magazine cover. Skills will be developed in graphic presentation such as food photography and the use of Adobe Photoshop to manipulate images and Adobe Indesign to create a magazine cover. Food product design skills will be addressed through food preparation, presentation and recipe

Technologies: Timber and Polymer technologies
Design Project: Design and create a clock inspired by the designer Ron Arad and Caroline Casey.
A study of the work of Ron Arad and Caroline Casey will be used as inspiration for designing a freestanding clock. Skills will be developed in the cutting, joining, laminating, sanding and oiling of plywood and the cutting, moulding, joining and shaping of plastics.

Design Project: Design and create a company title, logo and magazine advertisement for a new fashion accessory company. A television commercial will be developed to launch the company.
A study of the contemporary forms of graphic information and communication will be used as inspiration for designing. A television advertisement and logo design will be created to launch the fashion company. Skills will be developed in using digital media to collaboratively design and produce promotional materials.

Design Project: Design and create a bag inspired by the fashion designers Christian Lacroix and Lisa Ho.
A study of the fashion designers Christian Lacroix and Lisa Ho will be used as inspiration for decorative textile design applications. A contemporary bag will be designed and created. Skills will be developed in fabric decoration, following pattern instructions, cutting and basic textile construction techniques.
These projects are practical skill based projects to enable students to develop a range of products in the fields of textile manufacturing, cooking, workshop, video production and graphic design.

Design Project: Food product design and television launch
Design teams develop a concept to launch a cooking television show for teenagers. A television commercial will be created to launch the new show. Practical cooking lessons will develop hospitality skills in the making of a breakfast, lunch, entreé, main meal and dessert.

Design Project: Sitting Pretty
A study of contemporary designers is used as inspiration for a creative stool or small display table. Industrial design skills are developed through the use of timber, plastics, metal or coloured wallpaper will be used as a fun finish.
Design Focus Area: Fashion Design
Design Project: Fashion for a film premiere
A fashion item is designed to feature in a red carpet event for a movie premiere. A film and fashion designer will be used as inspiration for the fashion item. Fashion photography will be undertaken to create a magazine feature article for the event.
Design Focus Area: Lighting Design
Design project: A hanging display light inspired by the designers Ron Arad and David Trubridge
A hanging display light will be designed, created and evaluated. A comparative study of the designer Ron Arad and David Trubridge will be used as inspiration for an innovative lighting design. The design will be constructed from polypropylene and polycarbonate material.
Design Focus Area: Product and Promotional Design
Design Project: Creativity and Innovation: A product range and graphic design work to launch a new young designer.
This unit of work involves the designing, creating and evaluating of an innovative product range to launch a new young designer. A study of innovation and enterprising activity will be used as inspiration for a creative product range. Each student will design and create a product range and graphic promotional materials such as a business card and advertising.
Design Focus Area: Food Product and Graphic Design
Design Project: Design a logo, food product and promotional materials to launch a company for a niche market within the Australian Food Industry.
This unit of work involves design teams working collaboratively to design, create and evaluate a new internet food company. The study of existing food companies that service a niche market are used as inspiration for designing. This design project enables work to be undertaken individually and collaboratively to design a logo, product, packaging and interior store design for a new company.
Design Projects will be selected from the areas of product design and digital design. The product design project is inspired by the style of a contemporary designer and the digital design project will be a collaborative effort using fashion design and film making.
This introductory design project enables students to develop an understanding of the design process through simple graphic design skills. The brief is to design a decorative t-shirt range, business card and logo for a contemporary young designer.
A room divider is designed and created to reflect the design style of a contemporary designer. Students construct a basic frame for the divider. Personal design interests may be explored in areas such as textiles, timber, plastics or graphic design work.
Collaborative Digital Design
Design teams will develop a concept for a new advertisement for a fashion design company. Students will be provided with a garment, fashion accessory or jewellery item to feature in the advertisement. A comparison between commercial production and film making will be undertaken.
Major Design Project
Students use the design process to develop a Major Design project in any design field. The final design project reflects the student’s personal interests, perspectives and expertise that have been developed through projects and exploration of resources experienced in earlier years. Students undertake a comparative study of their design project with industrial and commercial practice. This project is marked externally and is weighted at 60% of the final HSC mark.
Innovation Case Study
Students research and communicate a case study of design innovation to stimulate creativity in design practice for the MDP. This unit includes a student of the impact of emerging technologies and trends influencing design and technological activities.
