PLC Sydney Chinese Debating Team
At the beginning of 2017, a very nice letter from NSW Debating Championships reached our Chinese staff inviting PLC Sydney to participate in the NSW inter-schools debating competition. We thought this was a great opportunity for our senior Chinese students to improve their analytical and language skills, so a talented new Chinese Debating team was formed. Twelve girls from our Year 11 Chinese Heritage and Background speakers started to prepare for a series of debates. In this process we made it to the quarter-finals, leaving many more experienced schools behind. In our winning debate against Scots College, we were proud to see Sunny Sun (Year 11) awarded the best debater of the round.
Every day, girls were really excited to meet at school or online to discuss tactics. Their Chinese level improved tremendously and friends were made along the way through meeting other teams to participate in mock debates.
After such a successful first season, the Chinese Debating Club will be an official PLC Sydney co-curricular activity. The club will run on Tuesdays at lunch. We are looking forward to seeing younger debaters join us. Together we could certainly develop wonderful skills and create life-long friendships.
