Since the beginning of May, accolades have been rolling in for Speech students. The PLC Sydney Speaking Team has been active in three events this month, with Public Speaking Captain, Stephanie Lee (Year 12), leading by example.
In the Plain English Speaking Competition (PES), Stephanie was selected as a winner of the local area final. She will head to the Regional Finals of PES which will be held at the end of May. Stephanie’s prepared speech focussed on the Art of Stillness in the tumultuous 21st Century. She then gave a unique impromptu speech on creativity in the classroom, using a Lego analogy to cope with the topic ‘Building a Bridge’. Stephanie has shown outstanding support and leadership in her role as Public Speaking Captain and it is apt that she should experience success in the area of her expertise. Apart from being a competent orator, her cheerful attitude, positive outlook and willingness to help makes her a great role model.
Lauren McGrath- Wild (Year 11) also spoke at PES but was unsuccessful in convincing the adjudicator of a berth in the next round.

Riding high on the team’s success, Sherie Pan (Year 11) progressed through to the Rostrum Voice of Youth NSW State Finals with her entertaining speech ‘Life without Limits’. Last year, Sherie was knocked out of the first round, but returned to training stronger than ever and determined to make amends. Well done Sherie for your hard work and tenacity and congratulations on an excellent comeback. We wish her well for the State Final in mid June. Louisa Cusumano (Year 9) also represented PLC Sydney in the Junior Speaking division.

Finally, the five newest members of PLC Sydney’s Speak Development team, Year 7 students, Alessia Dal Pane, Angela Enqi Lui, Sofia O’Sullivan, Ava Hamner and Isabella Chanine all performed with excellence at the Inner West Eisteddfod’s Public Speaking event. These fledgling students tried out their speaking wings and soared to new heights, ensuring that the school’s depth in speaking prowess is maintained. Congratulations to Alessia on winning the Public Speaking 11-12 years event. Highly commended were Isabella and Sofia. We are very proud of the first flight you have taken.
