PLC SYDNEY SPEAKERS SHINE AT THE 30TH ANNUAL WIDPSC
At the beginning of the school holidays, four PLC students competed in five exhausting days of competitive oratory, held at Ravenswood Girls School in Gordon, Sydney at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships (WIDPSC). Our Fab Four - Year 11 students Lina Cho and Eleanor Lawton-Wade and Year 12 students Jade Lin and Kelsey Lu - were key members of the Australian contingent. The field of 100 students - drawn from Canada, America, Britain, South Africa, Cyprus, Lithuania, China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Australia were pitted against each other in four speaking events (After Dinner/Persuasive Speaking, Reading, Debating and Impromptu Speaking).
In aggregate results, Eleanor ranked 5th in the world across four speaking disciplines, performing very strongly in Impromptu Speaking, Debating and Reading. Close behind, Lina was ranked 18th overall, narrowly missing out on the trophy ceremony.
In individual speaking events, Jade Lin ranked 4th in the world in Individual Debating. This is the best individual result in the discipline of debating that PLC Sydney has ever received. At the end of the heats, Kelsey was also well-placed ranked 3rd in After Dinner Speaking and 13th in Interpretative Reading.
More than the results though, was the sense of camaraderie and personal growth for our students, listening to and learning from some of the sharpest young minds the world has to offer. Team PLC Sydney should be proud of their amazing success and of their on-podium and off-podium endeavours. Not only did they perform beautifully, they demonstrated self discipline in training, were well-mannered and affirmed other competitors during the event.
It was a pleasure to lead and coach the delegation, none of which would have been possible without the expertise of old girls and former Speech and Debating students, Tash Noore and Mel Walsh, who helped train and prepare the students.
