Artexpression 2017, an exhibition showcasing this year’s HSC Visual Arts bodies of work by PLC Sydney students, opened at Adelaide Perry Gallery on Wednesday 16 August. Mr Julian Meagher, a Sydney artist who has been a finalist in the Wynne, Archibald, Blake and Moran prizes joined us as special guest speaker.
Mr Meagher imparted five pieces of advice that he believes have benefited his career, encouraging the girls to 1) love what they do 2) recognise failure as an important step along the way to achieving success 3) be committed 4) be in the moment and 5) recognise and avoid unhelpful distractions.
Elena Koskinas (Year 11), who will take up Vanessa Li’s role as Art and Design Captain in 2018, spoke of the wonderful contributions Vanessa has made at The Croydon during the past year and presented a gift of appreciation on behalf of the students and staff.
Ms Jo Knight, Head of Visual Arts, acknowledged the fine efforts and commitment of Year 12 Visual Arts, their teacher, Mr Mark Hetherington, and families and friends in the realisation of the works on display. Awards for Creativity and Consistency were then presented to Christina Ruoff and Victoria Hu. Katherine Chen received the Mr Paxton’s Choice Award and Georgia Perivolaris, 2016 Art and Design Captain, was in attendance to present the Captain’s Choice Award to Vanessa Li.
Exhibiting students Megan McConnell and Christina Ruoff shared stories about their experiences at The Croydon, speaking fondly of their Visual Arts classes this year, and on behalf of their classmates presented a gift in thanks to Mr Hetherington.
