Pet Show: A PLC Sydney Tradition
The first Pet Show was held 64 years ago, in 1953. At first, both dolls and pets were exhibited and judged and the money raised was contributed to the building fund or put toward other school improvements.
Since 1962, funds raised from the event have been donated to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT to assist in training guide dogs to support those who are blind or vision-impaired. For many years the Pet Show has been organised by Year 9 students.
The value of Pet Show as a service learning experience was explained by Mia Illias, who as a Year 9 student in 2006 was the Pet Show President: 'Through this experience my committee and I, together with the rest of Year 9, have gained a greater appreciation of how important charities are to those that are disadvantaged. Equally, we learnt that even small efforts by individuals when combined into a group effort can achieve what otherwise seems impossible.'
