International Justice Mission Fundraising

The Year 12 focus for service learning and fundraising is The International Justice Mission (IJM) Australia. Hosting several events throughout the year, the PLC Sydney IJM Committee hope to raise $10 000 to support IJM Australia (whose aim is to help end slavery around the world). There are currently more than 45 million people trapped in slavery and IJM works to save these people who are often no older than school students.
Thursday 18 May kicked off the first fundraising event - the Staff vs Year 12 netball game. At lunchtime, the school community flocked to Thompson Hall with their gold coin donation to witness this exciting grudge match. Year 12 proved too strong taking out the win to a roaring crowd. Pickard House supported the event with a sausage sizzle - raising $562.50. Combined with the $390.55 raised from donations at the door and subsequent donations, the total raised from this event was over $1000. A huge effort! Jacob Sarkodee, an IJM Australia representative, was in attendance. He tweeted ‘Great to be with [this] colourful bunch of PLC Sydney students & staff playing netball, helping to raise funds for IJM Australia to tackle modern slavery’ and ‘Thanks to everyone at PLC Sydney for their staff vs students netball match, raising $1000 towards ending slavery!’
On Friday 26 May, the PLC Sydney IJM Committee held a movie night in the Audrey Keown Theatre (AKT). Screening an early session of Monsters Inc. and a later session of 10 Things I Hate About You, the night was a huge success - raising approximately $4000.
Along with these two major events have been guessing competitions and various tutor stalls, with the annual Year 12 Fiesta later this year.
There is still a lot more that needs to be done and every donation or contribution is helping to free modern day slaves.
