'Rowing in May' Success
Each year during the month of May, the PLC Sydney rowing community hosts a major fundraising event Rowing in May. This is where parents, friends of parents, businesses and corporate crews (as a great team building activity) and PLC Sydney staff come together for eight rowing sessions over four weeks, ending in a race against similar crews from other schools at the Great Autumn Regatta.
This year we had five Eights training with us for Rowing in May and racing at the Great Autumn Regatta against 27 similar standard crews from six other schools.
It was a beautiful autumn day, on Sunday 29 May 2016, for the Great Autumn Regatta. Close to 300 competitors and over 500 spectators enjoyed the calm, sunny conditions. Picnics on the bank; continual races down the course to watch and cheer people on; and many a costume, such as superheroes, ensured the day had a friendly atmosphere and was lots of fun.
Congratulations to our mothers and friends crew (Tayl’OAR Swifts) who rowed beautifully down the course placing mid-way in the C Final. And to our Dads and friends crew (Annie’s Oar-fans) who muscled their way into 3rd place in the A final. The teacher’s crews (the OAR-stars and Teach-OARS) also performed well, placing 1st and 6th in the D final respectively.
A special mention to our corporate sponsored crew from ACOR Consultants (a group of multi-disciplined Engineers, Infrastructure Planners, Managers and Designers). Eight employees from ACOR qualified for the A Final and placed 5th.
Many thanks must go the parent organising committee from the Rowing Parent Support Group, Kate Meyer and Kate Holliday, for their amazing organisation of the event. And to Annette Irwin for her incredible catering.
We hope to see more parents, friends, businesses and staff joining in next year’s Rowing in May program to experience the wonders of rowing. Keep and eye out on our sports microsite for sign-ups between February to April 2017.
