2014 School Captain, Leila Bunguric, has won the 2015 Josiah Symon Scholarship No. 1 for placing first in English in her first year at the University of Sydney. She was excited to share her news with the school community, attributing her approach to her double Bachelor Degree of Law and Arts to her teachers here at PLC Sydney.
This scholarship was founded in 1922 by a gift from Sir John Symon KC of Adelaide, for distinction in the study of English language and literature. At the awards ceremony, Professor Liam Semler delivered a short speech in which he congratulated Leila on receiving four high distinctions for all English units during her first year, placing her towards the top of first year English students at the University of Sydney.
“When I received the news I emailed the Head of English, Dr Guy, and my English teacher of many years, Miss Veronica Trainor, because I felt that any skill I had at University level English was undoubtedly rooted in what I had been taught at PLC Sydney. I also emailed my French teacher Ms Ernenwein, while not my teacher within the faculty of English she has also fostered a passion for learning and I always found any French cultural theorists and philosophers she mentioned in class fascinating. Overall, the lessons I was taught by these teachers (all my teachers at PLC Sydney in fact) encouraged the value of curiosity for learning, and furthermore the value of delving deeper and beyond the requirements of the syllabus. These skills have underpinned my approach to my studies in my combined Bachelor of Laws/Arts degree (especially in my double major in English and Gender studies).”
Leila has been invited to do her Honours which she hopes to start mid next year.
