Another PLC Sydney International Blazer awarded
Congratulations to Madeleine Maloof (Year 11) who was honoured with an International Blazer at assembly on Friday 11 November 2016. International Blazers are awarded to students who are selected to represent Australia at a World Championships or Olympics whilst at school.
Maddy had always been fascinated by her father’s work as a dentist. Whilst working in his surgery, she regularly fielded questions about the efficacy of whitening toothpaste. Investigating this question was an obvious choice for her Year 10 Student Research Project.
Her project, titled ‘Dental Whitening and Enamel Loss’ was awarded first place in Biology in the Years 10 to 12 Division of the NSW Young Scientist Awards. Maddy was selected to present her work at the BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards. She headed to Melbourne where she was awarded third place for Scientific Research and was selected to represent Australia at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona in May 2016. Here, she was awarded third place in the special awards category by the American Dental Association Foundation.
In 2015 she shared the award of Year 10 PLC Sydney Scientist of the Year. As one of four students awarded the Dr Paul Burgis Award for Excellence in Scientific Research, Maddy will attend the National University of Singapore Science Camp in July 2017.
Maddy has sought to inspire and encourage other students by sharing her experiences and skills. Her message is clear: be passionate, choose a topic that matters to people, communicate frequently with mentors and put in the effort.
