Guide Dogs NSW Graduation Ceremony
On Friday 4 November 2016, Tamsyn Sharpe, Brianna Neowhouse, Ling Ling Lin, Christina Shi and I were honored to attend the graduation ceremony for Guide Dogs NSW. We were there to support PLC Sydney’s Guide Dog, Gypsie! Gypsie is the first Guide Dog graduate in the school’s history.
On arrival we were greeted warmly by organisers. We heard stories from puppy raisers and trainers, who told us of the miracles performed by Guide Dogs everyday. After a heartfelt story from a Guide Dog recipient and a moving talk from Guide Dogs NSW advocates, it was clear to see the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes to assist those in need through the training of Guide Dogs.
Next, the red carpet was rolled out and we watched as Gypsie was fitted with her harness and lead to join the graduating class. The Guide Dogs Association showcased the intellectual ability of the dogs with a series of demonstrations, including scenarios such as selecting an unoccupied seat and the training of puppies only nine weeks old.
We were lucky enough to meet two young puppies, Havana and Indra, as well as Gypsie herself. Gypsie’s first day of work was to be on the Monday after the graduation ceremony and her trainer assured us that she is a perfectly capable and loving dog.
Overall, this experience was extremely rewarding and we definitely recommend it to future students in Year 9.
