Artexpression, PLC Sydney’s annual showcase of HSC Visual Arts bodies of work, was officially opened at Adelaide Perry Gallery on Wednesday 17 August by Sydney artist, and Archibald Prize finalist, Ms Mirra Whale. The works of 22 students, which had been on display since Thursday 11 August, had already been well-attended, and opening night drew a similarly impressive crowd of family, friends and art lovers that filled the venue to capacity.
PLC Sydney Principal, Dr Paul Burgis, began official proceedings with a warm welcome. Ms Mirra Whale noted the high quality, diversity and originality of the works on display, congratulating the girls and wishing them luck in their future endeavours. 2017 Art and Design Captain, Vanessa Li (Year 11) presented a gift of thanks to 2016 Art and Design Captain, Georgia Perivolaris, and spoke with appreciation of Georgia’s contributions in the role.
Acting Head of Visual Arts, Ms Knight, and Dr Burgis, presented Certificate of Excellence awards to the following students: Kimberley Woo, Emma Vey-Cox, Hannah Golder and Georgia Perivolaris. 2015 Art and Design Captain, Unjelique Hajjar, returned to select the ‘Captain’s Choice’ award, presented to Tierney Clark. Finally, inspired by the Packing Room Prize at Art Gallery of NSW’s famous Archibald event, Ms Knight announced a new award in 2016 – the ‘Mr Paxton award’ – presented to Katrina Nakhoul.
On behalf of her class Ruby Carr presented a gift of thanks to Ms Knight for her support throughout the year. Mr Hetherington’s class combined to express their appreciation for his continual guidance. And Anneliese McCarthy spoke of her gratitude towards Mr Paxton for his ongoing assistance.
To close the proceedings the crowd was treated to an exceptional vocal performance by Beatrice Tucker and Caitlin Bell, singing The Punch Brothers’ This is the Song (Good Luck).
