Now open at Adelaide Perry Gallery is designartawards 2015, an exhibition of works by Years 7–11 PLC Sydney students of Visual Arts and Technological and Applied Studies. The opening event and awards presentation ceremony was held on Tuesday 3 November.

Merivale Publicity Manager and Ex-Student, Ms Rebecca Gibbs, was this year's guest speaker. Ms Gibbs spoke with admiration of the girls’ works on display and shared some fond memories of her time at the College, especially her studies in Textiles and Design at the Croydon. She also highlighted the importance of developing effective time management skills to meet the challenges of completing her Major Project in Year 12 and how they have assisted her success at university and in her career.

Gallery Curator, Ms Jo Knight, then introduced Head of Visual Arts, Mr Keith Fyfe, and Head of Technological and Applied Studies, Ms Jo Herrmann, to announce the award recipients. With the assistance of 2016 Art and Design Captain, Georgia Perivolaris, Ms Gibbs presented the certificates. Following the awards and on behalf of the students and staff at The Croydon Georgia Perivolaris presented Ms Gibbs with a gift in thanks for her contribution at the evening’s proceedings. Ms Knight thanked in turn Georgia Perivolaris for her participation at the event and extended her appreciation to The Croydon staff for the team effort involved bringing the display together.

Ms Jo Knight then introduced Head Teacher, Learning and Teaching, Ms Dale Anthony, who announced that Mr Fyfe will pursue his art practice full-time in 2016, retiring from teaching at the end of this year. She reflected on Mr Fyfe’s contributions to both PLC Sydney and The Croydon, since starting at the College in 1999, where he has been Head of Visual Arts since 2003. Ms Anthony commended Mr Fyfe’s approach to education in that it draws on a personal knowledge of art and art-making, consolidated in his own practice, and combines this with a teaching style based on addressing and engaging the individual in each of his students. On behalf of the staff and students at The Croydon Ms Anthony then made a presentation of thanks to the much-loved Mr Fyfe.

The designartawards 2015 exhibition continues 8.30 am – 4.00 pm weekdays until 13 November at Adelaide Perry Gallery.
