Just how is the water from Warragamba Dam treated before it trickles out of the taps at PLC Sydney?

This is a question that must be explored by our HSC Chemistry students so we headed off to visit Warragamba Dam and the Orchard Hills Water Filtration Plant on Wednesday 12 August.

Aside from an inspection of the dam from above and below, students carried out tests on water samples to assess turbidity, acidity and oxygen and phosphate levels. From the tiny fish that are screened out to the final addition of fluoride the students viewed all stages of the process in an onsite tour at Orchard Hills. The massive volumes of water passing into the plant never fail to impress and the opportunity to appreciate the stringent treatment regimen firsthand is invaluable for this section of the HSC Chemistry course.
