Success in Sleek Geeks Science Competition

Issue 1115_Eureka PrizePLC Sydney has received two Highly Commended Awards in this year’s Sleek Geeks Eureka Science School Prizes. Congratulations to Year 4 students Olivia Stavrakis, Selena Read, Dominique de Souza, Gabriella Mancini and Rosanna Cartwright.

Olivia and Rosanna’s entry ‘Stop the Freeze Please’, investigated what causes brain freeze after eating cold food and how it can be prevented.

Selena, Dominique and Gabriella’s submission ‘Bright Eyes’, explored how much light is emitted from devices such as tablets and kindles and the effect it has on melatonin production and sleep patterns.

The University of Sydney Sleek Geeks Science Eureka School Prizes are part of the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes. The competition involves communicating a scientific concept in a way that is accessible and engaging whilst increasing people’s science knowledge at the same time. Participants have to submit a one to three minute video piece and a 250 word description of the content, which can be produced by an individual student or a group of up to six students.
