Service Learning Trip to Timor Leste
During the winter holidays, 16 Year 10 students travelled to Timor Leste (East Timor) to volunteer at the two kindergartens that PLC Sydney supports in Dili.
Our students conducted lessons every morning with the children that included painting, singing, dancing, playing ball games and doing lots of craft activities. The afternoon was spent re-painting the classrooms and the outside murals.
The girls formed a strong connection with the children despite the language barrier that they encountered. They also gained a deep understanding of the history of Timor Leste as well as enjoying the natural beauty that the island offers.
My thanks goes to Victoria Cull, Jane Edgecombe, Linda Eades and Jane’s husband Bruce Henley for accompanying the girls and providing such wonderful support. I am also grateful to the PLC Sydney Foundation for their generous support of this trip and to the Year 10 East Timor Fundraising Committee for its continuous work to facilitate this important and ongoing commitment to East Timor.
