Guide Dogs Art Installation
In late 2017, PLC Sydney was invited to participate in a Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Art Installation project as part of their charity partnership with the 2018 Chinese New Year Festival.
To mark its 60th anniversary, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT will stage an exhibition featuring 60 life-sized Guide Dogs coin collection dogs painted and styled by a select group of creatives.
Inspired by the Year of the Dog in 2018, the resulting PLC Sydney artwork Blossom was painted by a group of our talented Year 9 artists. The design was informed by traditions in Chinese art such as costume design from Imperial China as well as the contemporary sculptural practice of Chinese born Australian artist Ah Xian. The girls did an outstanding job in designing and painting the final work and include Melody Meng, Heidi Watkins, Yianna Nikos, Giselle Wong, Helena Law, Linda Liu and Ariana Galanos.
The College has a long-standing commitment to service learning. For over 50 years it has continued this work through raising money to support the training program of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. This is achieved through The Pet Show, an initiative of Year 9 students an annual event on the College grounds where funds are raised through craft and food stalls, pet parade and judging.
The 60 dogs will be on display near Circular Quay throughout the festival period. Visitors to the public art exhibition will be invited to vote for their favourite dog by donating money into their favourite artwork – the dog that collects the most money wins the People’s Choice Award! Following the CNY18 Festival, a selection of the decorated dogs will be sold at a charity auction in March 2018.
So go along and support PLC Sydney’s work Blossom the dog by donating a coin into her during the exhibition!
