Debating Application 2020

Debating hones skills in analysis, critical thinking, listening and speaking. An offer to join a competitive team is given to students in Year 7 -12 who are selected through the audition process. Other opportunities to learn oratory skills exist through participation in House Debating and attendance at Debating Club (Friday lunch).

DEBATING TRIALS FOR ISDA AND ARCHALE TEAMS 2020

Debating applications for Year 8 -12, are currently closed.

Year 7 2020 students, whether you have debated before or not, are welcome to trial for debating Fridays after school (3:15pm) in Lyons House. Lyons House is located on the grounds of Evandale adjacent to the Uniform Shop.

  • Year 7 2020 will be auditioned on Tuesday 4 February, Wednesday 5 February, and Friday 7 February. Time: 3:15 pm - 5:15 pm
  • The online receipt which will be generated at the end of the application MUST be submitted by your parent or guardian before the trial date. Please print out the online receipt and bring that to the audition. 

Primary school students should contact the Primary School (Ms Virginia Shearer).

Training

In the following question, please indicate whether or not would you would be able to attend debating training and debates on the following sessions times:
  • Friday afternoon
  • Tuesday afternoon
  • Weekday afternoons
  • Friday lunchtime
  • Weekday mornings at 7.15 am
  • Year 11/12 would you be prepared to support Year 5-10 debaters by attending debates and help mentor and possibly coach
  • Year 7-10 debater, stay back and watch Senior debaters after your debate

Competitions

In the question below, please nominate your competition preference. We cannot guarantee your inclusion in any competition or team. If you are able to do both, please indicate both options as this will give you more of an opportunity to debate.
  • Friday evenings: ISDA   (starting 21 February 2020)                    
  • Tuesday afternoon-evening: Archdale (starting in May)

Please note that transport is not usually provided on Friday nights. Transport is usually provided to the venue on Tuesday afternoons but students may need to be collected from the venue.

Declaration

Commitment: Debating is a busy extra-curricular activity. Debaters will be expected to attend:

  • all debating training sessions arranged by their coach unless excused beforehand
  • every Debating Meeting, usually held on Friday lunchtime
  • all home debates as you will be required to assist with organising rooms before/after debates, signage, directing visitors, chairing and timing your own team
  • away debates as scheduled by your coach
  • sometimes there will be extra events like helping out when we host a final at school.
