Unstoppable Jessica Lim

Jessica goes from strength to strength

In the lead up to the 2010 HSC, PLC Sydney ex-student Jessica Lim heard Professor Will Christie (then a chair at the University of Sydney) give a series of talks at PLC Sydney on British Romanticism. She subsequently applied for the Bachelor of Advanced Arts at the University of Sydney, majoring in English literature, a course from which she graduated in 2013 with 1st Class Honours. Jessica went on to study a Masters of Philosopher in Children’s Literature at Trinity College Dublin, which she completed with Distinction in 2015.

Jessica is currently studying for her PhD in English Literature at the University of Cambridge. She has spoken at conferences in Dublin, Oxford and Barcelona, and has published on children’s literature in The Charles Lamb Bulletin, with forthcoming publications in The Forum for World Literature Series, Notes and Queries, and the Oxford Research English Journal.

Jessica is also the co-president and co-founder of the Lucy Cavendish Children’s Literature Society.  Jessica and friend, Jen Aggleton, formed this society to celebrate the diversity and rich heritage of children’s literature. The society aims to promote the awareness of children’s literature as a field of study and to facilitate communities based upon a shared appreciation of the power and impact of children’s literature upon individuals’ lives. To achieve this, the society is hosting a series of events that combine academic, scholarly interests with social activities. The society’s first and inaugural event is a conference, to be held at Lucy Cavendish College on 16 September, which will explore various interdisciplinary methodological approaches that may be used to examine the concept of the ‘child’s voice’ in children’s literature, and it features Professor Kimberley Reynolds as the keynote speaker.

Jessica also loves to indulge her other great passion, music. At home she was the first pipe organist to perform in the HSC Encore showcase and has given pipe organ recitals at St Andrew’s Cathedral, the Sydney Town Hall, and the Sydney Opera House; performed with the Renaissance Players and inaugurated the organ recital series at the Bowral Autumn Music Festival. Jessica sang with the Trinity College Dublin Chapel Choir (20142015) and is currently a member of the Magdalene College Chapel Choir at the University of Cambridge (20152016), as well as the incoming Assistant Organist for the Magdalene College Chapel Choir for 20162018.

We wish you well with your upcoming Children's Literature Conference Jess!
