ArtExpression 2019 Closing Night Celebration
A celebration event at the closing of ArtExpression, PLC Sydney’s annual exhibition showcasing the year’s HSC Visual Arts Bodies of Work, was held on Thursday 23 August. The works by 31 PLC Sydney Visual Arts students were displayed across two venues: the Audrey Keown Theatre Foyer and Adelaide Perry Gallery.
The evening’s official proceedings began at the AKT. Ms Courtney Wagner, Gallery Curator, introduced Principal Dr Paul Burgis who warmly welcomed Gallery visitors and commended each of the girls for their efforts in their HSC Visual Arts Bodies of Works. 2019 Art & Design Captain Claire Shi, then welcomed the crowd and congratulated the girls on their huge achievements bringing together an exhibition of varied and accomplished works. She spoke with appreciation for her past year in the Captaincy role, especially grateful for the support her fellow HSC Visual Arts classmates. Incoming 2020 Art & Design Captain Ariana Galanos then presented Claire with a gift on behalf of the PLC Community in appreciation of Claire’s wonderful contributions at The Croydon.
Special guest speaker Ms Louise Halpin, Education Program Producer at AGNSW, then addressed the crowd. She praised the girls for the level of professionalism in the works on display and acknowledged the pertinence and importance of the variety of themes brought forward in the exhibition. She spoke fondly about her experiences curating the popular exhibition Artexpress at AGNSW and of the strengths that are characteristic of HSC artwork which make the exhibition such a significant annual event on Australia’s art calendar.
Head of Visual Arts, Ms Jo Knight then acknowledged the fine efforts and commitment of Year 12 Visual Arts, and also their families and friends, in the realisation of the works on display. She thanked fellow HSC Visual Arts teacher Ms Jen Gair for her contribution and support over the past year. Ms Knight also expressed gratitude to the Performing Arts staff for the opportunity to host part of ArtExpression in the AKT.
Awards were then presented to the following students:
- Sarah Ong for Dedication and Persistence in Artmaking
- Claire Shi for Excellence and Resilience in Artmaking
- Anastasia Graham for Creativity and Bravery in Artmaking
- Samantha Rorie for Excellence and Determination in Artmaking
2018 Art & Design Captain Elena Koskinas awarded the Captain’s Choice award to Sophie Montague and the Mr Paxton Award was presented to Emily Gralton.
Exhibiting students Ella Athanassiou and Brianna Neowhouse presented a gift of thanks to their teacher Ms Knight on behalf of their class, and Emily Gralton and Lauren D’Addona to Ms Gair, on behalf of theirs. Claire Shi presented a gift of thanks to Mr Paxton on behalf of Year 12 Visual Arts 2019 and Ms Wagner thanked the Croydon Staff and volunteer Year 11 students for their assistance with catering and ushering.
